What is Matapee?
Matapee translated into Portuguese is tipiti. A traditional instrument used by several indigenous peoples of the Amazon to extract the poisonous liquid from wild cassava (manihot esculenta), making it safe for consumption. It is handcrafted with vegetable fibers, usually straw or vines, braided to create a long, flexible tube.
Matapee Brand
Inspired by the indigenous graphics of various ethnicities in South America, each piece is a visual tribute to the diversity and cultural richness of this heritage.
With a focus on preserving the environment, Matapee chooses linen as its main raw material, as it is a natural and durable material, in addition to valuing artisanal production.

ABOUT US
Founded by Katia Carey, Matapee reflects the strength and diversity of her heritage through three Indigenous peoples: Arawak (Guyana), Macuxi (Brazil), and Patamona (Guyana). Her greatest inspiration comes from her Arawak great-grandmother, the first female Toshao in Guyana. Growing up with her Macuxi and Patamona grandparents further deepened her admiration for Indigenous cultures and traditions.

Through fashion, Katia celebrates resilience and empowerment, preserving the beauty of Indigenous craftsmanship while shining a light on the importance of honoring and protecting these rich cultural roots.
